Sustainable Sandstone Harvesting
Artistry By Nature harvests sandstone rocks in an environmentally friendly way from our family-owned mine in Utah. Sandstone is a sedimentary rock composed of sand-size grains of mineral, rock, or organic material. It also contains a cementing material that binds the sand grains together and may contain a matrix of silt- or clay-size particles that occupy the spaces between the sand grains. Here at Artistry by Nature we use the rocks for creating unique animal carving kits, coasters, bowls, furniture and for natural landscaping around homes and businesses.
Each stone is carefully selected by experts from our mine in a way that does not disturb the environment. Each sandstone block is completely unique and is between 65 and 125 million years old and are classified by the Department of Interior as “unique with special values of the uncommon variety” and “true picture stone art.”
After the stones are collected we move them to our cutting facility where we carefully cut each each stone in a way that brings out the best features and characteristics of this beautiful picture stone.
After opening these gorgeous stones and exposing the unique interior we move them to our laser cutting facility where we do the final shaping into finished products. We mimic our ancestors as much as possible in minimizing waste and using every part of the rock. This has led to some unique products not found anywhere else. Our Sandstone Carving Kits are a great example of a final product that allows one to learn about the land under our feet, its' history and enjoy making something unique with your own hands.
